Introduction to Aikido

Every Month:
The First Wednesday, 7pm

(Next: October 1st)

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the community to the wonderful art of Aikido and to our dojo. This workshop will be run like a class and we will cover some of the cultural formalities of the practice and explain why we do what we do. The class will have a good physical pace and a good healthy workout will take place. We recommend long pants and a comfortable top. For safety reasons, please remove jewelry and trim finger and toe nails.

...And bring a change of clothes so you can stick around afterwards to ask questions and get to know us.

our dojo

The Santa Barbara Dojo of Aikido Kenkyukai International was founded in 1999 by Lia Suzuki Sensei, 5th dan. After its start in Montecito, the dojo eventually found its way to its present location on lower State Street, tucked back in its secluded and private setting.

Suzuki Sensei has been training aikido since 1982, and moved to Kamakura, Japan in 1987, to pursue her studies with her present teacher, Takeda Yoshinobu Shihan, 8th dan.

In addition to standard Aikido classes, Suzuki Sensei's dojo began pioneering work, using Aikido as a therapeutic vehicle for people with substance abuse and emotional health problems. In this on-going work, the dojo has worked closely with:

"The secret of Aikido is not in how you move your feet, it is how you move your mind. I'm not teaching you martial techniques, I'm teaching you nonviolence...

If all you think about is winning, you will in fact lose everything. Know that you and your opponents are treading the same path. Envelop adversaries with love, entrust yourself to the natural flow of things, unify ki, body and mind, and efface the boundary between self and other. This opens unlimited possiblities...

Those who are enlightened to these principles are always victorious. Winning without contending is true victory, a victory over oneself, a victory swift and sure. Victory is to harmonize self and other, to link yourself to the Divine, to yoke yourself to Divine Love, to become the universe itself."
